UMF pulls away from NEC, 3-0 in conference

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The University of Maine at Farmington outscored New England College 16-2 over the final 3:54 to take a 92-77 victory over the Pilgrims in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action tonight.

The Beavers (3-4) improved to 3-0 in the conference and are scheduled to visit Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at 1 p.m. NEC dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in the NAC.

Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) turned in his third straight double-double for UMF with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Johnson shared the game-high point total with teammate Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.), who knocked down four 3-pointers. Joe McCloskey (Howland, Maine) pitched in 14 points in the win, while Dan Kane (Bradford, Maine) supplied 11 points and seven assists and Nate Carson (Orrington, Maine) collected 10 points.

The Beavers led 76-75 with 3:54 remaining when Kane knocked down a pair of free throws to start UMF's 16-2 run to the win. Sumner scored 10 points in the stretch including 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cap 12 straight points for an 88-75 lead for the visitors with 1:32 remaining.

Abdirahman Mohamed led the Pilgrims with 19 points with Troy Prather adding 13 points. Robin Wilson and Eric Eklund also reached double-figures in the loss with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

UMF jumped out to the early lead up 21-10 just under six minutes into the game.  NEC would battle back cutting the lead to four with eight on the clock and then a layup by Mohamed and a 3-pointer by Ryan Schmitz gave the Pilgrims their first lead of the evening up 32-31.  The two teams would battle through the remainder of the opening half evenly as the Pilgrims finished the half shooting 59 percent from beyond the three-point line and head into halftime with the slight 50-46 lead.

The Pilgrims held on to the lead much of the second half before the Beavers would use a 7-0 run to take the 70-65 lead with just under nine minutes to play.  NEC tied the game 73-73 with 5:50 on the clock, but the Beavers ran away from the Pilgrims for the 92-77 victory.
