GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A second-half rally ran out of gas as Gwynedd-Mercy lost, 101-91 to #12-ranked Cabrini in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex.
The Griffins (5-3, 3-2 CSAC) trailed 52-34 at the half, only to battle back to get within eight midway in the stanza, but the Cavaliers (6-0, 4-0 CSAC) were just too tough down the stretch.
Junior Brendan Stanton led GM with 17 points while senior Dan DelConte added 16.
Cabrini's Jeremy Knowles led all scorers with 28 points off the bench. He went 6-for-6 from downtown and 10-of-13 overall. Corey Lemons added 26 points, 13 assists, and seven rebounds.
Gwynedd led 6-2 in the opening minutes, but saw Cabrini score nine-straight points to turn the tables. The Cavs hit seven first-half three-pointers including John Boyd's trifecta near the end of the period for an 18-point halftime edge.
The Griffins opened the second stanza on a 15-5 run capped by Doug Berzins' tough layup inside to cut it to a 57-49 contest with 13:50 on the clock.
Seemingly every time Gwynedd started to rally, the Cavs had an answer. Knowles would help put the game out of reach with back-to-back three-pointers, restoring a double-digit lead for the rest of the way.
Berzins finished with 11 points and added six assists and four boards. Junior Brandon Sharp netted 10 points.
GM held a 33-32 advantage on the glass with junior Frank Champion pulling down a team-high seven.
Cabrini shot 37-of-66 (56.1%) for the game and hit for a total of 13 three-pointers. Gwynedd rebounded from a 39% shooting performance in the first half to go 52.2% (36-of-69) while connecting on six treys.
Boyd totaled 12 points and five boards while teammate Fran Rafferty chipped in 16 points and six caroms.
It was the first time Gwynedd yielded 100 or more points since a 104-86 defeat at Alvernia back on January 19, 2008.
