Mount Saint Vincent Suffers Fourth Straight Loss

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team dropped its fourth straight game on Tuesday night after falling to Staten Island by a score of 66-59. Junior Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench to lead the Dolphins in scoring with 13 points.

Mount Saint Vincent held the lead just once on Tuesday after Chris Bonaventura (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer to push the Dolphins in front 3-2 with just a minute and a half into the game. From there Staten Island used an 18-6 spurt over the next six minutes to open a 20-9 advantage with 12:52 left before the half.

After falling behind by as many as 13 in the first half, Mount Saint Vincent battled back to cut its deficit to just two on a pair of occasions in the final three minutes of the period, before heading to the locker room behind by a score of 33-29.

Staten Island shot an even 40-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and used a 14 point, eight rebound stanza from Jordan Young to sustain the lead. The visitors also dominated the paint in the opening period and scored 26 of their 33 points inside.

Mount Saint Vincent would quickly fall behind by double-figures in the second half after an 11-4 spurt capped by a Dale Taranto triple pushed Staten Island in front 44-33 with 16:35 left to play. The Dolphins would not be able to get their deficit under double-figures the rest of the contest and Staten Island built its lead to as many as 20 points with 7:21 left to play.

Staten Island improved its shooting performance coming out of halftime and ended the game converting 42.6-percent of its opportunities overall. All three of the visitor's three-pointers came after the half and they finished the game just 14-for-24 from the free-throw line.

Young and Matthew Van Manen each recorded a double-double for Staten Island, with Young totaling game-highs in points with 26 and boards with 13. He finished 12-for-19 from the floor, while Van Manen finished 7-for-9 on his way to 15 points and 10 rebounds. T.J. Tibbs also had a strong night with seven points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Caputo finished the night 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the arc on his way to a season-high point total. He also grabbed three rebounds and handed out an assist. Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 11 points and led the team with three assists, while Cody Gauvard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) totaled 10 points and swiped two steals.

Yeuri Santos (New York, N.Y.) came off the bench to match the team-high in rebounds with seven and also chipped in four points. Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) also grabbed seven boards and added seven points.

Overall on the night, Mount Saint Vincent shot just 33.8-percent from the floor and has now shot below 40-percent in its last four games. The 55 points is a season-low and the 43.8-percent mark from the free-throw line is the second lowest mark of the campaign.

The Dolphins were outrebounded on the night 49-39 and lost the battle in the paint after giving up a season-high 44 points inside. It also marked the first time this season the Mount has not reached at least 30 points in the paint.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to get back on track Thursday night when they travel to league rival Maritime. Tip-off with the Privateers is set for 7:00 p.m.
