Men’s Basketball Downs Regis College, 62-38 in NECC Opener

WESTON, Mass. – Elms College junior forward David McDaniel (Plainfield, N.J.) scored a team-high 14 points and hauled in a game-best 11 rebounds to help lift the Blazers to a 62-38 victory over Regis College in Tuesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's basketball game at Higgins Gymnasium.

With the win, Elms extends its winning streak to three and evens its record at 3-3 overall, 1-0 in NECC action, while Regis falls to 2-3 on the season, 0-1 in conference play.

Leading 13-10 after the first 10:52, Elms closed out the final 10 minutes on a 19-7 run to post a 32-17 lead at intermission. Junior forward Jamal Hulum (Norfolk, Va.) started the stretch with a layup and senior guard Bryant Corcoran (Waterbury, Conn.) finished the run with a layup with two seconds remaining in the period to give the Blazers a 15-point lead.

Hulum scored 10 of his 13 points in the opening 20 minutes, connecting on 4 of 5 from the floor as Elms shot 35.7-percent from the field in the period. Senior guard Daniel Gonzalez (East Windsor, Conn.) added two treys and totaled eight first half points.

Regis strung together an 8-3 run to start the second half as Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) hit a jump shot just 12 seconds into the stanza and Osanto Marc (Kissimmee, Fla.) nailed a pair of three-pointers to pull the Pride to within 10 at 35-25 with 17:45 remaining in the game.

Leading 39-29 at the 13:38 mark, Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) drained a trey, and Jonathon Josselin (Medford, Mass.) converted a layup a minute later to narrow Regis' deficit to five at 39-34 with 12:36 to play.

Elms then used a layup and a free throw by Hulum to spark a 16-2 run that featured nine points from McDaniel including a string of five straight to help the Blazers cruise to a 62-38 victory.

McDaniel scored 10 of his team-best 14 points in the final 20 minutes and grabbed all 11 of his rebounds on the defensive glass as Elms outrebounded Regis, 42-36.

The Blazers finished with a 42.0-percent field goal percentage and held the Pride to just 25.0-percent shooting from the field despite a 7 of 16 effort from Marc who finished with a game-high 17 points.

Corcoran finished with 10 points to round out three Blazers with double-digit point totals, while junior guard Charles Bason (Riverdale, Md.) handed out a game-high four assists.

Elms held a 20-4 edge in bench points, led by Gonzalez's eight, in addition to converting 17 of 23 free throw attempts (73.9-percent) while holding the Pride to just 11 attempts (6 of 11 for 54.5-percent).

Marc tallied a team-best eight boards, while Gosselin netted seven points in the losing effort for the Pride.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Friday, Dec. 9 when it travels to Hartwick College for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
