NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College men's basketball team dropped their home opener to Lehman College, 62-60.
The Hawks led the game from the opening tip, right up until just 3:44 remained in the game. But five-straight free throws gave Lehman their first lead, 60-56 at the two minute mark. The Hawks maintained their composure as Panagiotis Koutsoloukas drained two straight baskets to tie the game at 60.
After Lehman missed a three-pointer with just seconds on the game clock, Hunter called time out to set up their final play before a possible overtime period. But Joseph Salerno inadvertently threw the inbounds pass in George Nimmons' direction, and he raced to the basket to find the bottom of the net as time expired, giving the Lightning a dramatic 62-60 come-from-behind victory in front of the 2011 Hunter Homecoming crowd.
Koutsoloukas led all scorers with 19 points and 15 rebounds, his third double-double of the 2011-12 season. Jeffrey Daza and Anthony Uter added 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Hawks shot 43 percent from the floor (19-44), including a 55 percent effort in the second half.
Hunter (3-3, 1-1 CUNYAC) returns to action this Monday night at 7:00pm as they host FDU-Florham (1-4, 1-1 FREEDOM) in the Hunter Sportsplex.
