GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A 15-4 run to open the second half helped Gwynedd-Mercy stretch a nine-point halftime edge to go on and defeat Penn State-Berks, 89-74, in non-league action Monday night.

Junior Brendan Stanton led GM (5-2) with 16 points and five assists. Teammate Dan DelConte netted 15 as the Griffins shot 52.7% (29-of-55) for the contest.

Tom Smith led PSU with 16 points and 11 boards off the bench. Shawn Green added 14 as he hit for three of his team's seven three-pointers.

Gwynedd would lead by seven early in the game before the Lions (0-4) chewed down the deficit to just one on four occasions, but never took a lead. Leading by four with just over six minutes in the stanza, Tom McKeefery would pickpocket a steal off of Tore Turner near the top of the key. Turner would then be called for a flagarant foul giving GM the ball back after the free throws. McKeefery hit both and on the ensuing possesion, Stanton completed a three-point play with his hard drive and foul to the basket, turning a 35-31 lead into a 40-31 edge.

Junior Doug Berzins tied a career-high with eight rebounds to lead Gwynedd's 41-34 advantage on the glass. Brandon Williams pulled down seven to go along with his 10 points.

The 15-4 scoring spurt in the second gave GM its biggest lead of the game at 20 (65-45), where they held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
