The Buena Vista men's basketball team used a 27-9 run early in the second half to break open a 15-point game, and the Beavers went on to top visiting Crown College on Saturday afternoon, 100-56.
Five players were in double-figures for BVU, led by Jeff Janssen's (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) 16 points, on 7-of-11 shooting. Doug Bissen (Earling, Iowa/Harlan), who leads the Iowa Conference in field goal shooting this season at 65 percent, went 4-of-4 from the field and 6-of-8 at the charity stripe to follow with 14 points. Cole Darrow (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) chimed in with a career-best 13 points, as Michael Elming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and Trent Fisher (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) turned in 12 and 10, respectively. Fisher also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, to go along with two blocked shots. Wes Nordquist (Adel, Iowa/ADM) added three blocks and four steals.
A total of 14 players scored in the game for BVU, which shot 61.7 percent from the field, including 11-for-22 from downtown.
Crown jumped out to a 4-2 lead before BVU quickly used a 14-2 run to go up 16-6 with 14 minutes to play. The Storm kept it in single digits until a jumper from Janssen pushed it back to 10 at 23-13 and the Beavers were in double figures the rest of the way.
BVU led 46-26 at halftime and after Crown pulled to within 15 early on, BVU then used its run to build a 74-41 lead with just more than eight minutes to play.
Buena Vista improves to 2-5 overall and will now return to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night for a home tip-off against Wartburg College beginning at 8:00pm
