SALEM, Ore. – The No. 22 Puget Sound men's basketball team remained perfect on Saturday with a 73-59 victory at Willamette. The Loggers (7-0, 2-0 NWC) forced 23 turnovers from the Bearcats (1-5, 0-2 NWC) to key the victory.
With the 23 forced turnovers, the Loggers held a 19-11 advantage in points off turnovers. They also dominated inside as they outrebounded the Bearcats 52-41, including 20 offensive rebounds that led to 23 second-chance points.
"We just were disciplined defensively tonight," said head coach Justin Lunt. "We knew we had to make things difficult for (Willamette) and we did a good job of that. We also rebounded the ball very well on both ends of the floor tonight. It was a good team win."
Anthony Gittens led the Loggers in scoring with 17 points and was one of four Loggers in double digits. Gittens also had seven rebounds. Edric Egberaure scored 12 points for the Loggers and also added seven rebounds. Julian Fernandez and Derek Jobe each tallied 11 points.
A strong defensive effort held the Bearcats to just 36.2 percent shooting and one player in double digits. Taylor Mounts had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats took an initial 2-0 lead but would not lead past the first three minutes of the game. With 17:07 left in the opening half, Gittens' layup gave the Loggers a 3-2 lead. They would hold that lead for the rest of the night and built it to a nine-point advantage by halftime.
In the second half, the Bearcats closed the gap to four points when Noah Ripley's layup made it a 48-44 game. However, the Loggers responded with a 8-0 run to push the lead back to double digits where it stayed the rest of the way.
The Loggers head back out on the road on Wednesday to face Evergreen St. in a non-conference doubleheader. The women's game will tip at 6 p.m. while the men will tip at 8 p.m.
