FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team held off Green Mountain College 74-73 to improve to 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers (2-3 overall, 2-0 in NAC) are scheduled to host the University of Southern Maine Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Eagles (1-4, 0-2) are slated to host Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also had 11 points for UMF with Pet Sumner (Cramerton, Maine) adding 10 points.

Sumner's dribble-drive layup with 18 seconds left in the game was the deciding basket for the Beavers and Kane sealed up the win when he broke up the Eagles' inbound play with four seconds left.

Carnelius Green (Oviedo, Fla.) and Jack Hepburn (Miller Place, N.Y.) each netted 21 points to power Green Mountain with Robert Holloway (Concord, Calif.) providing 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the loss. Hepburn drained six 3-pointers in the game.

The Beavers got off to a hot start with a trio of Dickey 3-pointers helping the hosts to an 18-10 lead with 15:03 left in the first half. A Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) three gave UMF a 23-12 command with 13:12 until intermission.

Green scored 12 points over the final eight minutes of the half as the Eagles chiseled away at the Beavers' advantage. Hepburn drained his fourth three of the opening half with 21 seconds left in the frame to cut the UMF lead to 34-32 at the break.

The two teams handed the lead back and forth through the opening five minutes of the second half before a Sumner three and layups by Johnson and Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) gave UMF a 50-44 lead with 13:53 remaining. The Eagles battled back to tie the game at 53-53, but an Iman 3-pointer and Johnson two-handed slam helped UMF back to a 60-53 lead with 8:11 to play. The Eagles followed with seven straight points with a Hepburn trey knotting the game at 60-60 with 4:55 to play.

A Sumner three and basket helped the hosts back to a 67-62 lead with 2:51 left , but the Eagles had one another push left in them. Hepburn was fouled shooting a three and knocked down all three free throws for a 68-67 edge for Green Mountain with 1:53 remaining.

After two series of matching exchanges, Sumner drove from the top of the key to the basket to give the Beavers a 74-73 lead with 18 seconds to play. A UMF turnover on a missed Hepburn trey gave Green Mountain a final chance, but Kane's theft sealed the Beavers' 74-73 win.
