Second Half Surge Leads Maroons Past Kalamazoo

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago outscored Kalamazoo College 41-11 during the game's final 16 minutes en route to an 89-54 victory in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Game Summary

  • Chicago (5-2) never trailed in the contest. The Maroons led by as many as 12 in the first half before taking a 44-35 lead at the intermission.

  • Kalamazoo (1-3) trimmed the deficit to 48-43 with 15:37 remaining, but Chicago then launched a 22-2 run to put the game away.

Statistical Highlights

  • Matt Johnson led all scorers with 21 points. 

  • Sam Gage finished with 15 points, while Royce Muskeyvalley and Tommy Sotos added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

  • Eric Fishman paced the Hornets with 18 points. Joe Wilson (11) and Mark Ghafari (10) also netted double figures.

  • Sotos (pictured) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as Chicago enjoyed a 44-21 edge on the glass.

  • Steve Stefanou handed out a game-best seven assists.

  • The Maroons' 35-point margin of victory was their largest since a 93-52 win at Case Western Reserve University on Jan. 19, 2003.

  • Head Coach Mike McGrath moved into second place on Chicago's all-time coaching victories chart with the 186th win of his 13-year tenure (186-128).

  • Chicago took a 12-11 in the series which dates back to 1965-66.

  • Johnson's 21 points marked his second 20-point effort of the year and 12th of his career.

  • Muskeyvalley scored double digits for the first time in his career.

  • Gage's 15 points matched his career high.

  • Chicago improved to 5-1 at home.
