CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team lost to visiting DePauw University (Ind.), 76-59, in the championship game of the 2011 Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament on Saturday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (1-2 overall) are back in action at home this Tuesday, November 22 versus Denison University at 7:00 p.m.
Junior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) led three Spartans in double-figures with a team-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Senior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) added 10 points and nine boards, while sophomore center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
Fowler was named to the all-tournament team.
DePauw (2-0), who shot 50 percent from the field, also had three in double figures, with all-tournament selection Sean Haseley at 18 points, Barry Flynn at 17, and tournament most valuable player Michael Wilkison at 11 points and three assists.
The Spartans never led in the game but did tie the Tigers at 6-6 when Summers hit a jumper at the 16:00 mark. The Tigers then moved ahead with a 17-7 run and led 23-13 when Haseley nailed a three-pointer at 9:05. Case came back with 5-0 run and pulled within five, at 23-18, following a Summers layup with 6:53 left in the half. However, DePauw was able to end the period on an 18-8 run to lead 41-26 at the break.
In the second half, the Spartans trimmed to their deficit to 10, at 51-41, when freshman forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) nailed a jumper with 12:08 left to play. Unfortunately, the Spartans would get no closer the rest of the way as DePauw held on for the 76-59 victory.
Following Tuesday's game with Denison, the Spartans have the holiday weekend off from competition, but will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 30 versus Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m.
