Nate Youngrecorded a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Baruch College Bearcats to a 74-70 CUNYAC road victory over CCNY on Thursday night at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
The two teams were tied at 35 with 1:30 left in the first half, but the Bearcats scored the next seven points to take a 42-35 lead into halftime. They continued their solid shooting at the start of the second half by scoring the first 10 points to lead 52-35 with 14:57 remaining.
The Beavers slowly chipped away at the deficit and went on a furious rally late in the game to tie the score at 70 with one minute remaining.
The Bearcats responded with tight defense to keep the Beavers scoreless in that final minute, while a jumper by Chris Beauchampand a free throw each by Young and Mickey Abbatiellowas enough to walk away with the 74-70 victory.
The visiting Bearcats (3-4, 1-0 CUNYAC) shot 57 percent (31-54) and out-rebounded the Beavers (1-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) by a 37-27 margin to record their second consecutive victory.
Beauchamp finished with 17 points (7-11 fg) and Calvin Jurewicz-Johnsontallied 10 points as the Bearcats begin their CUNYAC schedule on a winning note.
Hector Hernandez led the home team Beavers with 27 points and five rebounds in playing all 40 minutes.
Baruch will return home to play a non-conference contest against Manhattanville College from the Freedom Conference on Thursday, December 8, at 7:00 pm.
