PASADENA, Calif. – The Stevens Institute of Technology scored 60 points in the paint en route to a 91-78 victory over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at the Braun Athletic Center.

The Ducks (4-1) raced out to a 12-3 lead less than four minutes into the game before Caltech started to chip away at their deficit. The Beavers (1-2) dwindled the visitors lead down to 28-26 with 3:29 left in the frame after Andrew Hogue nailed Caltech's third three-pointer in the half. However, Stevens responded with a 12-0 scoring spurt in taking their largest lead of stanza at 40-26 with 1:29 remaining. Stevens went into the locker room with a 42-29 advantage.

After Caltech scored on its first possession of the second half to get within 42-31, Stevens never let the Beavers closer than that 11-point margin until less than 90 seconds left in the game. A Michael Edwards shot from behind the arc with 44 seconds left brought the Beavers deficit to 87-78 but Stevens scored on their final two possessions to seal the victory.

Stevens hit on 35 of their 56 field goal attempts (62.5 percent), most of which came down low, to aid in their win. The Ducks held a 60-30 edge in points in the paint.

Caltech's defense kept them in the game throughout as they forced 21 turnovers in posting a 27-13 edge in points off of turnovers.

Stevens had a pair of starters nab 20-plus point efforts. Sheldon Jones had a game high 21 points on the strength of an 8-for-13 shooting night in 30 minutes. Simon Smith chipped in a 20-point effort while grabbing a game high 14 rebounds.

Edwards tied for game high scoring honors with 21 points in 34 minutes of action. Alex Runkel posted his second straight double-double with a 13-point, 10-rebound evening. The first year duo of Bryan Joel and Hogue rounded out the double figure scorers for Caltech with 13 and 11 points respectively.

The contest was a part of the two-day, four-team Caltech/Occidental Thanksgiving Classic. In the event's other game, Occidental prevailed over the University of Dallas 72-65. Caltech will travel to Occidental College on Sunday afternoon to play the University of Dallas at 2:00 p.m. in the final day of the four-team event.
