GETTYSBURG, Pa.--The Hood College men's basketball team (1-0) had four starters in double figures and the Blazers never trailed in a convincing 80-54 victory over the Drew University Rangers (1-1) Friday evening in the first round of the Gettysburg Days Inn Tournament at Bream Gymnasium.
The Blazers will take on Ohio Northern University in Saturday's title game at 4 p.m. at Gettysburg. The Polar Bears edged the host Bullets, 72-71 in overtime, in the first contest of the evening.
Hood used strong inside play to assume a 20-9 advantage just 5:45 into the game; six of Hood's first eight buckets came on layups. The Blazers led by as many as 12 in the stanza before the Rangers made their move and went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:32 to tie the score at 21-21. Drew was unable to leapfrog the Blazers for the lead however as Jordan Diggs drilled a three-pointer to snap the scoring drought and put Hood back up 24-21. Hood would go on to push the lead back to double figures before the end of the half and led by six, 37-31, at the break.
The Blazers overwhelmed the Rangers in the second half, outscoring Drew 34-10 in the paint. Hood converted better than 50% of its shots in each half and picked up assists on 23 of its 34 baskets.
Cameron Cook led all scorers with 24 points, including four three-pointers. LaVar Rich finished with 16 points, setting a new career-high, on 8-of-12 shooting. Trey Quinn had a solid all-around game in his Blazer debut, contributing 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Justin Stone also reached double digits in the scoring column, chipping in 10 points to go along with eight boards, eight assists and four steals.
Hood outrebounded the Rangers, 43-30, and forced 25 Ranger turnovers.
Hood's last regular season tournament title came during the 2008-09 season when the Blazers bested New Jersey City University and Lebanon Valley College to win the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
