Boston, Mass. - Freshmen Varun Ram (Clarksville, Md.), Carter Trent (Little Rock, Ark.) and George Papadeas (Athens, Greece) combined for 43 points to lead the Trinity College men's basketball team to a 64-47 win over the Wheelock College Wildcats in the 27th Annual Harbor Invitational Championship at the Clark Athletic Center at UMass-Boston this afternoon. Trinity won the four-team tournament for the second consecutive year, improving their overall record to 4-1. The Wildcats fall to 1-4 on the season.
Trinity started the day on a 7-0 scoring run, and held the lead the rest of the way. The Bantams built a double-digit advantage early in the first half, which peaked at a 29-14 lead on a three-pointer from Trent with 6:31 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats went on a 9-1 run to close the first half, cutting Trinity's lead to 30-23.
Wheelock senior Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) hit a fade away jumper to start the second half, cutting the Trinity lead to 30-25, but that's as close as the Wildcats would get, as Trinity kept their opponent at arm's length the rest of the way - a cushion of at least seven points.
Papadeas scored fifteen points on 7-9 shooting and added seven rebounds off the bench for the Bantams, while Kaim matched Papadeas' game-high 15 points. Ram was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, scoring 14, and adding four rebounds and three assists. Trent notched 14 points on 4-9 shooting from long range, and added five assists, four rebounds, one steal, and one block.
Senior co-captain Chris Applegate (High Point, N.C.), last year's Harbor Tournament M.V.P., scored six points and notched eight rebounds, a steal, and two blocks for the Bantams.
