Freshmen scoring paces Scots past Bearcats 100-78

The Maryville College men's basketball team earned their first victory of the season in St. Louis, Missouri as the Scots defeated the Rust College Bearcats in the Cavallo Classic on the campus of Webster University on Saturday evening by the score of 100-87.

Maryville held the Bearcats to 36 % shooting in the first half that included a 4-for-13 effort from beyond the arc while pulling out to a 52-39 half-time lead. The Scots found their perimeter game hitting 8-of-16 treys while going 19-for-41 from the floor at the intermission.

Rust could not match Maryville's torrid shooting pace in the second half (52%) as the Scots finished the game hitting 12-of-24 long distance attempts. MC out-rebounded the Bearcats 48-37 en route to the 22-point road win.

Rust (0-1) was led by Markeith Wilson and his 23 points. William Montgomery and Larry Veasley each added a dozen points for the Bearcats.

Maryville (1-1) displayed freshman Oscar Butler going 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc for an 18 point effort. Fellow rookie Christian Ford torched the Bearcats with 17 points while going 3-for-4 from downtown. Milton Stanley added a double double-effirt with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior forward Donald Rucker was strong under the basket with a dozen points and eight boards. Senior guard Rande Sibley was the last of five Scots to record double digits in scoring with 11 points.

The Scots will conclude their eastern swing with a challenge against the tournament host Webster University on Sunday. Webster is coached by former MC assistant Chris Bunch. The tip-off is slated for  4:00 pm (CST).
