Strong First Leads John Jay over Rams

Farmingdale, N.Y. - A 38-point first half would be the deciding factor in the Farmingdale State men's basketball home opener, as they fell to the visiting John Jay Bloodhounds, 85-76, in tonight's second game of the Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Tournament. The Rams (0-1) saw 26 points from senior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.).

John Jay took a quick 6-0 lead, forcing a Rams timeout. They built up an 11-4 advantage until a 7-0 Farmingdale run over the next 2:05 tied the game at 11-11, highlighted by a three-pointer and layup by Flournoy. Both teams traded baskets for another tie, 19-19, with ten minutes to play. The Rams trailed by one point, 31-30, with 3:22 remaining before John Jay closed with a seven point run to take a 38-30 lead into the locker room.

In the second, Farmingdale made a comeback with a 12-4 run to start the half, trailing 44-42 at the 15-minute mark. Over the next eight minutes, the Rams made 9-of-10 free throws and would trail 60-59 with 7:07 left on the clock. John Jay went on another run to push the lead to seven, 68-61. Two quick Farmingdale layups cut their lead back down to three, but foul trouble would send the Bloodhounds to the line as they hit 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final minutes for the victory.

For John Jay, senior guard Jerome Alexander (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team with 22 points and six assists, while sophomore guard Jamar Harry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 14 points, 10 boards and five assists. Senior guard Joel Gibson (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 14 points.

Flournoy scored a game-high 26 points, including 4-of-7 from long range, while senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Darnell Chavis (New York, N.Y.) posted 11 points and senior forward Ryan Tierney (Wantagh, N.Y.) played solid with eight points and eight boards.

The Rams will now face Brockport State (0-1) in tomorrow's Consolation game at 1:00 p.m. John Jay (2-0) will face Montclair State (1-0) in the Championship game at 3:00 p.m. Montclair defeated Brockport in the first game of the night, 97-92.
