CORVALLIS, Ore. – It was more of an early learning experience than anything else for a young Pacific men's basketball team Friday night as the Boxers fell 64-33 to Oregon State in an exhibition game held at Gill Coliseum.

The Boxers, which had two new players in it's starting five, were outclassed by the Pac-12 Beavers from the tip, scoring just four points in the first 11 minutes of the contest.  Oregon State built a dominant 33-9 halftime lead before the Boxers regained their composure to play some solid basketball in the second half.

Second year Head Coach Tim Cleary was quick not to call the loss ugly.  "Our guys competed and we actually held them scoreless for a seven-minute stretch of the second half," Cleary said.  "It was all about how we competed.  We'll use it as a building block and a learning tool.  There are a lot of good things to take from this."

Pacific shot just 11 of 43 from the field and 1 of 19 from three-point range.  Newcomer Dustin Bowser (Jr., Bellingham, Wash.) led the Boxers with six points on 2 of 5 from the field.  David Berney (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) added five points while Charles Mosley (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) and Joey Burns (Fr., Hermiston, Ore.) each scored four.  Marc Eppinger (Fr., Camas, Wash.) led the Boxers on the boards with six rebounds.

Jared Cunningham led Oregon State with 12 points on 4 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range.  Devon Collier and Eric Moreland each had 11 points, with Collier contributing six rebounds.  The Beavers shot 49 percent (24-49) from the field and 8 of 23 from three-point range.

It was all Pacific could do to work their jitters out inside cavernous Gill Coliseum in the first half.  The Beavers scored the first five points of the game before Mosley scored a lay-in at the 18:24 mark to get the Boxers on the board.  Pacific would go scoreless for the next five minutes as the Beavers rode a string of lay-ins and dunks to build a 19-2 lead with 13:36 left in the stanza.

The scoring slowed for the Beavers over the next 10 minutes, but the Boxers could not put the ball in their own bucket.  Eppinger connected on two free throws to make it a 27-6 game with 9:18 left and Burns scored a lay-in with 4:13 to go that made it a 33-9 Oregon State lead at halftime.

The Boxers and Beavers engaged in a closer game in the second half.  Pacific held the Beavers to six points over the first six minutes of the stanza and pulled within 19 points, 41-22, on a Trenton Dixon (Fr., North Powder, Ore.) jumper.  The Beavers would not let the game get any closer, building their biggest lead of 33 points on a Rhys Murphy dunk with 1:34 to go.

Pacific will make the official start to their 2011-12 season at home on Tues., Nov. 15, when they host NAIA Evergreen State.  Oregon State will open on Sat., Nov. 12, when they host Cal State Bakersfield in their second annual Nike N7 Game.
