Tough Loss At Stevens Point Ends Yellowjackets' Season

More news about: UW-Superior

Thursday at Stevens Point, the Yellowjackets found themselves taking the court in their WIAC semifinal against UW-Stevens Point, a team that swept the regular season series from them, a team that won the WIAC, and the defending national champions.  And on Thursday, the Pointers played like all of the things listed above.

The Pointers never trailed, and with the score tied at 9-9, Scott Hoelzel dunked to give the Pointers the lead, one they would never relinquish, and they dispatched the Yellowjackets from the WIAC playoffs by an 84-52 score.

Following Hoelzel's dunk, the Pointers went on a 22-9 run, stretching their lead to 31-18.  The 13-point margin was how the teams would go to the half, with the Pointers up 39-26.  The game was put out of reach when the Pointers started the second half with a 10-0 run.  The lead continued to swell as the game went on, peaking at 32 points when Brian Ironmonger hit a jumper with 51 seconds to play.

For the Yellowjackets, it was a tough night shooting, as the stifling Pointer defense forced them to take shots they didn't want to take.  Consequently, shot just 39.3% in the first half.  That number fell to 29.2% in the second half.  On the other end, the Pointers shot 54.7% for the game, including 10-19 from three-point range.

Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wis.) was the leader for the Yellowjackets in just about every category, including points with a team-high 12.  He was the only Yellowjacket to reach double figures in the game.  Culy also led the Yellowjackets with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Louis Hurd led the Pointers with a game-high 22 points.  Jordan Giordana chipped in 17 and Jerrel Harris added 15 for Stevens Point.

In addition to Culy, Jake Smith (Rhinelander, Wis.), Greg Roeder (Mercer, Wis.), Marcus Helland (Baldwin, Wis.) and Ryan Pierce (Norfolk, Va.) played the final game of their Yellowjacket careers.

The Yellowjackets wrapped up their 2010-11 season with a record of 15-12.
