RICHARDSON, TX (02.19.11) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team closed out the regular season in fine fashion Saturday afternoon as the Comets trounced LeTourneau, 83-47, for Senior Day at the UTD Activity Center.
Junior Chris Barnes nearly single-handedly outscored the Yellowjackets in the first half as he ended the game with 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting. Barnes was 2-for-3 from three-point range and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line, adding four rebounds and two assists. This marked the second time this season that Barnes has reached the 30-point mark.
The Comets (now 20-5, 16-4 ASC) shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field in the opening half as UTD grabbed a 48-22 lead at the break, thanks to 21 points from Barnes. Barnes was 7-of-8 from the field, scoring the first 10 points of the game for the Comets, in just 15 minutes as UTD took advantage of 20 points in the paint and 15 points off 10 LeTourneau turnvoers in the opening half.
UTD would quickly extend its lead to 30 points just 1:30 into the second half as Barnes scored the first six points for the Comets after the break, giving the home team a 54-24 elad with 18:30 remaining. After a two-minute scoring draught by both teams, UTD senior Curtis Davis extended the Comets' lead to 33 points, 57-24, on a three-pointer with 16:22 left and from that point it was on cruise control. UTD extended its lead to as many as 37 points before settling for the 36-point win.
Barnes led three Comets in double figures as junior Greg Chiasson had 11 points and Davis ended the game with 10 points. Davis led the Comets with eight rebounds and five assists. UTD shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) for the game, making 9-of-17 shots (52.9%) from three-point range, and shot 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the foul line as a team. The Comets dominated boards, out-rebounding LeTourneau, 41-29.
For the Yellowjackets (now 3-22, 2-18 ASC), Jace Wililamson had a team-high 14 points as their season came to a close with the loss. LeTourneau shot just 26.1 percent (12-of-46) from the floor, hitting 5-of-22 attempts (22.7%) from beyond the arc, and shot 75 percent (18-of-24) from the charity stripe.
The Comets are now set to host the American Southwest Conference Tournament, Feb. 25-27, at the UTD Activity Center. UTD, the top seed out of the East Division, will open the event at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Concordia-Austin, the No. 4 seed from the West.
