Mane Sets Scoring Record in Loss to UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 79-71 to sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall in the final regular-season game for both teams. The Eagles drop to 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the WIAC as they had their five-game winning streak snapped. UW-Stevens Point improves to 22-3 overall and 14-2 in the conference with its 10th straight victory.

UW-L will be the fourth-seed for the WIAC Tournament while UW-Stevens Point clinched the conference title with Saturday's victory and will be the top-seed for the league tournament next week. UW-L will host fifth-seed UW-Platteville Tuesday, February 22 in the WIAC Tournament Quarterfinals starting at 7:05 p.m. UW-Stevens Point, ranked sixth on D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, will host a tournament semifinal Thursday, February 24 at 7:05 p.m.

The Eagles' Tony Mane set a single-season school record for points (633) Saturday as he totaled 32 against the Pointers. Larry Halverson held the record with 629 points during the 1976-77 season. 

Mane was 12-of-21 from the field Saturday, including three-of-four from three-point range, and five-of-six at the free throw line. 

The game was tied eight times in the first half. UW-Stevens Point took a 40-36 lead with 1:43 left in the first half before UW-L scored the final five points to take a 41-40 halftime lead.

The contest was tied 49-49 with 13:00 remaining before the Pointers' Nick Krull scored on a layup to give them a 51-49 advantage. Mane hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 52-51 lead, but UW-Stevens Point went on a 11-2 run to take a 62-54 lead with 7:28 left. 

UW-Stevens Point led 72-61 with 3:17 remaining, but Jeff Heiden and Cory Degner hit back-to-back three-pointers for UW-L to cut the lead to 72-67 with 2:22 left. The Pointers scored the next three points to take an eight-point lead, but the Eagles cut the deficit to 75-71 with :38 left after a Mane jumper. UW-L could get no closer the rest of the game. 

Heiden scored 13 points off the bench for the Eagles, going three-of-six from three-point range. Degner totaled eight points. 

UW-L shot 49.0% from the field, including 60.0 (nine-of-15) from three-point range, and 85.7% (12-of-14) at the free throw line.

Jerrel Harris led four starters in double figures for UW-Stevens Point with 17 points. Tyler Tillema scored 14 points while Louis Hurd had 12 and Krull 10. DeVon Jackson added 12 points off the bench. 

The Pointers shot 63.0% from the field, including 22.2% (two-of-nine) from three-point range, and 64.3% (nine-of-14) at the line.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, February 22 hosting UW-Platteville in a WIAC Tournament Quarterfinal starting at 7:05 p.m.
