Cortland Uses Fast Start to Beat Oneonta, 81-59

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland used a hot-shooting first half to open a 20-point lead and the Red Dragons never looked back in an 81-59 victory over visiting Oneonta.

Cortland shot 63 percent from the floor (19-of-30) over the opening 20 minutes, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. The Red Dragons finished at 55 percent from the field and 53 percent (9-of-17) from behind the arc for the game.

Cortland is 9-14 overall and 6-10 in the SUNYAC, while Oneonta slips to 8-16 and 7-10. Cortland is tied with Potsdam for seventh place in the conference with two games left, while Oneonta is tied for fifth with New Paltz with one game remaining. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the league's postseason tournament.

Sophomore Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) led five Cortland double-figure scorers with 18 points and also handed out seven assists. Sophomore Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) scored 16 points and added three assists. Winter and Smith both made 4-of-7 three-pointers.

Freshman Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Valley) and sophomore Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench, and freshman John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) finished with 12 points.

Junior Terrence Parker (Queens/John Adams) led Oneonta with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Senior Derek Hahn (Youngsville/Sullivan West) scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Cortland never trailed in the contest. Connolly scored the game's first five points, and back-to-back threes by Smith a few minutes later extended a 10-4 lead to 16-4. Cortland led 41-18 with 3:19 left in the half and was up 45-25 at halftime. The Red Dragons' lead grew to 28 points 4:14 into the second half and remained in the 20's the rest of the game.
