Lightning Ends Regular Season on High Note

More news about: Lehman

At season's end, every team wants to be playing its best basketball when entering the City University of New York Athletic Conference Championships.

The Lehman Lightning on the other hand, just wanted to right the ship after a stretch that included five losses in its last six games; a stretch doubly painful given it came against five CUNYAC opponents.

And while one win doesn't erase the last two weeks, Saturday's impressive 79-62 victory – a game the Lightning led wire to wire – will certainly go a long way towards invigorating Coach Steve Schulman's team as it prepares for next weekend's start to the postseason.

Trying to find a winning combination on the court, Coach Schulman reinserted sophomore George Nimmons back into the starting lineup and it paid dividends immediately as he scored five early points – a three-pointer and layup – that helped Lehman jump out to a 13-2 lead. The Lightning also got an unexpected boost on the offensive end from Chukwuma Ndukwe who tallied eight first half points.

Perhaps most important to the Lightning's opening half success was the scoring of Victor Garcia. The Lehman senior dropped in 14 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting as the Lightning entered the locker room ahead 37-28.

The Lightning was able to maintain its momentum in the second half thanks to contributions from just about everyone, but most surprisingly Ndukwe. The big man from Nigeria was nearly unstoppable around the basket, tallying 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a dunk to put Lehman up 59-43, and even converted on 3-of-4 free throws attempts.

John Jay would close to within 70-58 on Sanjar Tursunov's jump shot with 4:23 remaining. However, unlike last game against Hunter, the Lightning was on target from the free throw line down the stretch, as Ndukwe and Alain De La Cruz combined to knock down 7-of-8 to keep the Bloodhounds at bay.

In the win, Garcia finished with a team-high 23 points while Ndukwe poured in a season-high 21. Jonathan DeJesus had a workman-like day, notching 15 points and 13 boards. Senior playmaker Alain De La Cruz was tremendous distributing the basketball, tallying eight assists to only one turnover.

Lehman finishes the regular season 12-13 overall, 6-7 in the CUNYAC, and will wait to see who it will match up against next Sunday.
