Three is the Key, Warhawks Defeat Blugolds

More news about: UW-Whitewater

It was deja vu' for UW-W junior center Chris Davis.  As he did the first time these teams met, Davis started out hot, hitting four of his first five shots, accounting for nine of Whitewater's first 17 points.  With the Blugolds leading 11-10 at 13:22, the Warhawks went on a 12-0 run to regain the lead at 22-11 with 9:45 on the clock.  After that run, Whitewater outscored UW-EC 30-13 the rest of the way to lead 52-24.

UW-W hit 7-10 three point shots in the first twenty minutes on the way to shooting 62% from the field.  Eau Claire was just 1-6 on threes, and shot 43%.  Whitewater also had an edge at the line, hitting 9-11 compared to 3-6 for the Blugolds.  Davis led all scorers with 18 points, the same number he scored in the first half of the January 15 meeting.

Eau Claire came out strong in the second half, outscoring UW-W 13-5 in the first five minutes.  Davis, again, led UW-W by scoring the Warhawks' first seven points.  With Whitewater leading 75-51 at 9:15, the Blugolds went on an 8-0 to narrow it to 75-59 with 7:11 on the clock, and that sixteen point margin would be as close as they got the rest of the way.

Eau Claire shot a better percentage, 53% to 51%, but Whitewater made nine more threes than UW-EC (11-2).  UW-W also doubled up UW-EC at the line, hitting 16-18 while Eau Claire made 8-12.

Davis led boths teams with 25 points, and freshman guard Cody Odegaard added 16, ten of those coming in the second half when he was 4-5 from the floor.  Davis also topped the Warhawks with eight rebounds and four assists.  Davis also had five steals, high in the game.  Senior center Amadou Fofana was the top scorer for UW-EC with 18 points, one more than junior forward James Pfitzinger, who also grabbed eight boards.

The Warhawks will close the WIAC regular season with a pair of home games this week.  UW-W will host UW-Oshkosh Wednesday February 16 at 7:00 and UW-Superior Saturday February 19 at 1:00.  Both games will be played in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
