Atlanta, Ga., February 11, 2011 – Senior Spencer Gay scored a team-high 21 points and junior Dylan Richter added 20 but it was not enough to lift the Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team as the Bears dropped a 92-67 decision at Emory University on Friday night in Atlanta, Ga.

Emory entered Friday night's game averaging a league-best 83.6 points per game and used a fast-paced offensive attack to dictate the pace of play against the Bears. Emory had four players score in double figures, led by Julien Williams and Austin Claunch, who tallied 18 points apiece, with Claunch also adding 12 assists to his game-high scoring output.

Emory shot 50.7 percent from the field, compared to 43.1 percent shooting for the Red and Green, and the Eagles were 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from the three-point line.

Emory opened the game shooting 8-of-11 from the field and jumped out to an 18-10 lead on a short-range jumper from Claunch. Washington University scored a couple of baskets in the paint to pull within four, 18-14, but Emory caught fire from downtown, scoring 16 points in just over three-minutes of action.

The Eagles drained four three-pointers during that 16-2 run, two courtesy of Claunch, who scored 13 first-half points. Emory hit six of its first nine three-point attempts and led by as many as 20 points in the first half.

The Bears concluded an 8-0 run with a three-pointer from sophomore Max Needle, making the score 38-26 with under five minutes showing on the clock, but Emory responded by stretching its lead back to 20 points on a Jake Davis lay-up, taking an 18-point lead into the half.

Gay led Washington U. with 12 first-half points on 6-of-10 shooting and the Bears shot 50.0 percent (13-of-26) from the floor in the opening period. However, Washington University turned the ball over 12 times leading to 13 Emory points, and the Eagles held an 11-4 edge in second chance scoring, thanks to 10 offensive boards and a 20-12 rebounding edge.

Washington University used a 6-0 run six minutes into the second half to cut its deficit to 14 points, but the Bears were never able to pull any closer down the stretch. Washington U. shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the second half.
