Lightning, Nangle Drop Hammer on York in 72-68 Win

Some moments during the course of a basketball game transcend the final outcome regardless of whether they came during the final seconds to win a game, during a key stretch to shift momentum, or within the first three minutes.

With Lehman's Victor Garcia having just converted on a runner in the lane to give the Lightning a 47-46 lead, its first lead since the score stood at 16-15, junior Dwight Nangle, normally a defensive sparkplug, had one such moment.

As York attempted to break through the Lightning's full court pressure defense, Nangle wrestled the ball away from Ike Iwu, made a beeline for the basket and threw down a vicious lefthand tomahawk stuff over David Simon who tried in vain for the blocked shot.

Nangle's dunk sent the Lehman bench and the crowd into hysterics and seemed to provide an added energy boost to a Lightning team that had fought so hard up to that point to regain the lead. Though York would tie the game several minutes later, it would never be able to regain the lead. That was due in part to some large baskets by the trio of Victor Garcia, Samuel Batista and Jonathan DeJesus.

All square at 54, Garcia canned huge three-pointer to give the Lightning some breathing room. York cut the deficit back to one on Shamir Wilkinson's layup, but DeJesus was there to answer.

With 2:52 to go and Lehman clinging to a one point lead, 65-64, DeJesus came up aces again scoring on a layup to thwart the Cardinals. A determined Wilkinson scored again before Sam Batista and DeJesus tallied baskets over the next minute to provide the Lightning with enough of an edge to hold on for the win.

Batista finished with a team-high 23 points while Garcia came alive in the second half to score all of his 16 points. DeJesus line of eight points and 11 rebounds pales in comparison to his previous game of 22 points and 18 rebounds, but his play down the stretch was crucial to the victory.

York's All-American Marcel Esonwune finished with an impressive stat line of 14 points and 17 rebounds, but did not prove to be a significant factor as foul trouble combined with a nice defensive job by the Lightning kept him in check.

Lehman's next CUNYAC measuring stick comes on January 26 when the Lightning travels to Staten Island to face the currently undefeated (7-0 CUNYAC) College of Staten Island Dolphins.
