Elms Pushes Past Daniel Webster, 87-69

Nashua – Senior Chris Voukides (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore John Hickson (Springfield, Mass.) notched 15 points apiece but Elms College used a steady and balanced attack keyed by 19 points from Daniel Gonzalez (E. Windsor, Conn.) on the way to an 87-69 NECC victory over the Eagles in Daniel Webster's regular season home finale Thursday night at the Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Edgar Martinez (Springfield, Mass.) added 14 points while Juan Alverio (Toa Baja, P.R.) notched 13 and 13 Blazers reached the scoring column as Elms (16-7, 9-3 NECC) won for the eighth time in their last 10 outings.

Junior Eric Suarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 13 points for Daniel Webster (10-12, 4-8 NECC), while rookie Aiden Collins (Paterson, N.J.) notched a career-best 10 points off the bench.

The Blazers helped their own cause racking up 14 steals to the Eagles' five, and did a bulk of their damage at the line, knocking down 21 of 29 at the charity stripe taking advantage of 22 Eagle fouls.

DWC came out firing in the opening minutes build a 9-3 lead behind a trey from senior Lawrence Green (Roosevelt, N.Y.) and two layups from Suarez.

But a Martinez layup and Arsenio Avant (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) three sparked a 14-0 run punctuated by a Darius Griffin (Winter Haven, Fla.) layup for a 17-9 lead and Elms never trailed the rest of the way.

Trailing 42-30 at the break, DWC chipped away and pulled within eight (49-41) after a three from Hickson and two at the line from Suarez with 17:14 left, but two threes from Gonzalez and a David McDaniel (Plainfield, N.J.) layup helped put together a 14-1 run over the next 4:12 pushing the lead to 21 (63-42) and the Eagles pulled no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

The game was preceded by a brief ceremony to honor the Eagle program's four outgoing seniors, Voukides, Green, Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) and Omari Wright (Laurelton, N.Y.)

Green would finish with three points, two rebounds, two assists and a block, while Wright notched two points, three boards and three assists.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday for a NECC contest at Wheelock College tipping off at 3:30 p.m. Elms hosts Southern Vermont on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
