Hot Shooting From Deep Clips Hawks

More news about: Lehman

Coach Steve Schulman's crew played the part of party crashers on Friday as his Lightning upended the host Hunter Hawks 76-67 on homecoming night to improve to 3-3 on the season, and more importantly, 2-0 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Lightning turned in its best three-point shooting performance of the season, hitting on 11-of-21 attempts, perhaps none bigger than Alain De La Cruz's triple that extended Lehman's lead to 65-56 with 2:37 remaining. De La Cruz finished a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Hunter would get no closer than seven points as the Lightning closed out the contest from the free throw line with George Nimmons knocking down 6-of-6 from the stripe to send the Hawks to the loss.

Lehman opened its scoring with a three-pointer by Samuel Batista, but then fell behind 12-5 early. Not until back-to-back three-pointers by Jonathan DeJesus did Lehman tie the game at 22-22. A three-pointer nearly four minutes later by Quaseem Weems opened up Lehman's biggest first half lead at 31-26. Hunter ended the half on a 9-2 run on the back of five points by Eric Klingsberg and entered the locker room leading 35-33.

In the win, Batista was high-point man for the Lightning with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting while DeJesus continues to rack up the double-doubles, tallying 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds. De La Cruz finished with 11 points. Patryk Odedina, seeing extended action, contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes.

New Jersey City University stands in the way next for the Lightning as Lehman travels over the George Washington Bridge on Monday night looking to push its win total north of the .500 mark.
