Mahwah, NJ: Behind 14 points each from Stephon Treadwell, LaQuan Peterkin, and Ahmad Hassan, the Roadrunners earned a 78-68 victory over the Red Hawks of Montclair State in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball match-up tonight at the Bradley Center. With the victory the Roadrunners improve to 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the NJAC. Montclair falls to 17-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Treadwell shot 7-14 on the night and Peterkin went 5-8 from the field while Hassan shot 6-9 from the field including a perfect 2-2 from behind the three-point arc. Will Sanborn chipped in 12 points and Peterkin and Elgin Brown grabbed a team high six rebounds each. The team went 31-54 (57%) in the win. Montclair's Andrew August led the way recording a double-double which included 21 points and 11 boards while AJ Larkin recorded 18 points on the night. The team went 24-60 hitting 40% of their shots in the game.
The lead changed five times and the score was tied on four occasions as the two teams played to a 34-33 halftime score with the Roadrunners ahead by the single point. Monclair State got on the scoreboard first with a jump shot from August before Peterkin slammed down a dunk to tie the game for the first time, 2-2. Off a steal by AJ LoRusso, Treadwell laid in a basket to go up, 4-2, before the Red Hawks tied the game with a basket from Tom Bonard, and took the lead, 6-4 with a basket from Tyrone Prewitt. Montclair held a slight advantage over the next 11 minutes before Ramapo tied the game once again at 6:01, at 22 apiece, with a two-point goal from Treadwell. In the remainder of the half, Ramapo held a slight edge until 00:27 when a basket from Larkin put the Red Hawks up, 33-32. Travis Conyers responded with a basket of his own to head into the locker room with a slight, 34-33 edge. Treadwell finished on top of all Roadrunners with ten first half points shooting 508 from the field. Ramapo combined hitting 13-28 hitting 46% of their shots. Peterkin added eight points and Treadwell pulled down four boards. Montclair went 13-29 (45%) from the field with August leading the way with 11 points.
Charles Miller opened the second half of play with the back end of a two-shot foul to tie the game at 34-34, before Ramapo pushed to a six point edge at 17:58 with a three-pointer from Sanborn, 42-36. Freeney responded with a jumper to spark a 6-0 run to tie the game again, this time at 42-42, before the final tie of the game came two minutes later, 48-48 when Sean Young hit back-to-back free throws for Montclair. That would be the final time the game got close as Ramapo worked their way to their biggest lead with 4:20 to play when a jump shot from Demetrius Boards put the Roadrunners up 72-58. Montclair was unable to break into the lead dropping the NJAC match-up, 78-68. Sanborn and Ahmad Hassan netted ten points each in the half while the team shot 18-26 (69%). Larkin led the Red Hawks with 13 points and August added ten of his own in the half.
Ramapo returns to action on February 9th when they take on Rutgers Newark at 7:30pm at the Bradley Center.
