Men's Basketball Falls to NJCU, 64-48

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup to the visiting Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University this afternoon at the West Quad Center Gym, by a score of 64-48. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 10-11 overall on the season, while the Gothic Knights improve to 12-8 overall on the year.

The first half featured a tight contest with five ties and five lead changes. NJCU held the largest lead of the half at six, 17-11, with 11:55 remaining before the break. The Bulldogs would mount a quick 10-0 run over the next 3:27 to take their largest lead of the half at four, 21-17, with 8:28 left in the opening stanza. Sophomore Steven Grant capitalized the run on a thunderous dunk, forcing the Gothic Knights to take a timeout to regroup. Junior Tyshawn Russell sparked the run scoring five of the 10 points.

Both teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the teams would head into the locker room tied at 27 all.

NJCU came out of intermission on fire, as the Gothic Knights scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 40-27 advantage with 17:28 remaining in the game. The duo of Keith Williams and Walik Albright scored all 13 points in the run, netting eight and five, respectively.

The Gothic Knights would lead the rest of the half by double digits, building their advantage to as many as 19, 62-43, with 2:06 left in the game. NJCU's stingy defense led to 23 BC turnovers in the game, with 13 coming via steal. The Gothic Knights took full advantage of the Bulldogs' miscues scoring 31 points off of those turnovers. NJCU also held the slim rebounding edge, 39-34.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 38.0% (19-for-50) from the field, while the Gothic Knights shot 42.4% (25-for-59) from the floor.

Junior Amil John led the way for BC scoring a team-high 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field. Russell finished the game with 11 points and five assists, while senior Ahmad Hemingway chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Grant recorded eight points and seven rebounds for the game.

For NJCU, Albright led all scorers with 16 points, while Josh Hosang and Williams each chipped in with 10 points. Hosang also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Brooklyn returns to action this Monday, February 7th, as the Bulldogs will travel within the borough to CUNY Athletic Conference and South Division rival New York City College of Technology in a vital game for seeding in the upcoming conference tournament. BC will look to sweep the season series against the Yellow Jackets, as Brooklyn defeated City Tech, 94-76, in their first meeting back on December 2nd.
