Thomas More Falls, 68-64, to Washington & Jefferson on the Road

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team had two players reach double-figure scoring, but it wasn't enough as the Saints fell, 68-64, to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, February 5, 2011) at the Henry Memorial Center.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 11-10 overall and 7-3 in the PAC.  With the win, the Presidents improve to 8-14 overall and 5-6 in the PAC.

W&J jumped out to a 23-10 lead with 10:35 to play in the first half when Paul Matthews made a three-pointer.  The Saints answered with a 17-9 run capped by a jumper by senior shooting guard Aaron Miller (Lexington,Ky./Henry Clay) to cut the lead to 32-27 with 4:34 to play in the opening half.  The Presidents closed out the half on a 9-6 run to increase the lead to 41-33 at halftime when R.J. Pilato made a lay-up with 1:41 to play in the half.

The Presidents opened the second half on a 13-5 run to increase their lead to 54-38 with 14:30 to play in the game when Nick Morelli made a three-pointer.  Undaunted, the Saints answered with a 20-4 run capped by a free-throw by senior shooting guard Brian Muse (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel) to the tie the game at 58-58 with 5:26 to play in the second half.  W&J came right back with a 5-1 run to take a 63-59 lead with 2:36 to play in the game when Adam Braithwaite made a jumper.  Thomas More responded with its own 5-1 run to tie the game at 64-64 when junior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) made a lay-up with 1:05 to play in the game.  The Presidents closed out the game on a 4-0 run for the 68-64 victory.

Stafford led the Saints in scoring with 17 points, while Miller added 14 points.  Miller led the team on the boards with eight rebounds and junior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) led the team in assists with three.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday (February 9) when they host Waynesburg University at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
