TACOMA, Wash. – Ryan Hoff had a career-high 16 points off the bench but the University of Puget Sound men's basketball dropped an 89-76 decision to Whitworth on Friday. The Loggers (8-12, 5-6 NWC) took the lead out of the gate but the No. 2 Pirates (20-0, 11-0 NWC) took the lead with 14:08 remaining in the first half and never looked back.
"We have to be perfect against a team like that," commented head coach Justin Lunt. "And we weren't quite perfect tonight."
Hoff's 16 points led the Loggers and highlighted a 30-point effort from the Loggers bench. One of Hoff's four three-pointers pulled the Loggers within three points at 5:11 mark in the first half. The Pirates with a 14-4 run over the final five minutes to take a 43-30 lead at the half.
The run continued into the second half as the Pirates opened a 22-point lead with 15:36 remaining. Ryan Rogers and Kaleb Shelton led a late Logger charge as they both tallied nine points in the second half. The Loggers chipped away at the lead but could only close it to 13 points as time expired.
Both Rogers and Shelton finished with 13 points. Whitworth's Felix Freidt had a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double. Mike Taylor added 21 points while David Riley scored 19 points.
The Loggers shot 41 percent from the floor and 42.3 percent beyond the arc, making 11 three-pointers to Whitworth's six.
The Loggers will hit the hardwood again tomorrow as they host Whitman at 6 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse.
