THROGS NECK, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College senior Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead his team to a 69-57 victory over Maritime College on Thursday evening. The Knights have now won six games in a row to improve to 14-5 overall (12-2 Skyline).
Mount Saint Mary led by as many as ten in the second half, but Maritime continued to hang around and pulled to within two as junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y.) hit one-of-two free throws at the 3:40 mark.
However, as he has done so often this season, it was freshman Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) who came up with the clutch shot for the Knights. After missing his first five attempts from three, Stabach drained a key triple with 3:02 remaining and sent the Knights to a five-point advantage, 60-55.
Maritime senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) missed a three at the other end and this time, it was sophomore Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) who made the Privateers pay. His long range attempt found the mark at the 2:09 mark, putting the game out of reach at 63-55. It was a parade to the free throw line over the final two minutes as Mount Saint Mary emerged with a 69-57 victory.
Despite a lack of action over the final few minutes, it was Morris who led the way for the Knights for much of the evening. The senior turned in another efficient performance, hitting on 5-of-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line for a team-high 16 points. His 12 rebounds were also a team-high.
Stabach struggled to find the range (5-of-16 from the field, 1-of-6 from three), but still managed 14 points to go along with a team-high three assists. Junior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) added 11 points, while Ragaglia connected three times from three on his way to 10 points.
Hurley provided the bulk of the offense for Maritime with 26 points on 9-of-18 from the field. Hurley also grabbed a team-high 12 boards and had four steals. Senior Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y.) was the only other player to reach double figures (12) for Maritime.
The normally sharp-shooting Knights managed a field goal percentage of just 36.7-percent for the contest and committed 18 turnovers. Maritime, however, hit at only 32.3-percent from the field and had 19 turnovers.
Up next for the Mount is a trip to Farmingdale State College. The Rams took the first game of the series in Newburgh on January 8, so it will be the Knights trying to even the score on Saturday. The tip is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on February 5.
