Maritime Falls To Mount Saint Mary, 69-57, At Riesenberg Gym

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to visiting Mount Saint Mary, 69-57, Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Privateer record to 8-11 overall on the season (6-8 Skyline), while the Blue Knights improve to 14-5 (12-2 Skyline).

Senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) registered a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Classmate Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) registered 12 points and junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) had seven boards in the losing effort.

Maritime grabbed early 7-0 and 9-3 leads, but Mount Saint Mary stormed right back to take a 13-12 lead with 8:37 left to play in the first half. The Privateers shot just 26.5-percent from the field in the opening half and the Blue Knights used 20 points off the bench to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room at the half.

Mount Saint Mary built its lead up to 10 points twice early in the second half, the later time being on a three pointer by Dylan McCann with 15:30 to play. Maritime cut the deficit down to just three points in six minutes after a free throw by Hurley at 9:35. The Privateers would come within two points, 57-55, with 3:40 to play, but the Blue Knights finished the game on a 13-2 run to preserve the victory.

The Mount was led by Tim Morris, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Three other players registered double-digit points for the Blue Knights: Joe Stabach had 14, Kevin Milella had 11 and Lenny Ragaglia had 10. Carlos Valdez picked up 10 rebounds in the win.

The Maritime men's basketball team returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 5, when the squad plays host to local conference-rival Mount Saint Vincent at 2 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
