NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team dropped a 96-62 decision to Elms College on Thursday evening at a packed Yarnall Athletic Center.

Elms (14-6 overall, 7-2 NECC) shot 52 percent as a team and had 15 players find the scoring column. Edgar Martinez put on a dazzling performance and was perfect on the day, pouring in a game-high 24 points on 11-for-11 shooting from the field. Daniel Gonzalez also had a strong outing, going 8-for-11 from the floor and finishing with 22 points. Juan Alverio chipped in with 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Freshman Timm Quinn led Mitchell (1-18 overall, 0-10 NECC) with 19 points and added four assists. Junior Paul Jefferson also finished in double figures with 14 points and made four three-pointers. The Mariners shot just 32 percent from the field.

The teams matched baskets in the opening minute before Elms took the lead for good behind a pair of free throws from Carson Miller. The Mariners hung around, however, and trailed by only one with 12:35 to play in the half. The Blazers responded with a 17-2 run over the next six minutes that left them with a 32-16 lead. Gonzalez accounted for eight points during the stretch, and Elms carried the momentum into the halftime break with a 47-27 lead.

Elms continued attacking throughout the second half and led by as many as 38 points. The Blazers shot 56 percent in the stanza and scored 49 points, two more than in the first half. Elms held a 49-28 advantage on the glass and outscored Mitchell 46-14 in the paint.

Mitchell will next host Daniel Webster College on Saturday, February 5 at 3 p.m.
