BOX SCORE
Elizabethtown, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2011) - Elizabethtown College (15-3, 6-2) exploded with a 51-point second half for an 80-59 win over Alvernia University (12-4, 7-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Etown.
The Crusaders had the clamps on defensively in the first half holding Etown to just 31 percent shooting while Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) and Stephan Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./G.A.M.P.) both reached double figures to help Alvernia to a 32-29 halftime lead. The only thing keeping the Jays in the game as a 5-for-10 effort form the 3-point line over the first 20 minutes.
Whatever the Jays missed in the first half they connected on in the second half -- including raising their 3-point percentage by hitting five 3s on nine attempts in the half. They nearly doubled their shooting percentage hitting 20-of-33 after the break, nearly 61 percent.
They broke a 41-all tie with four straight points and slowly worked that lead over 20 points capping a nine-minute, 29-7 run with a 3 at 4:52.
Alvernia answered with back-to-back 3s, but the deficit was too great and the Jays coasted to the home win.
Alvernia got a team high 19 points and 16 rebounds from Boone and Thompson finished with 16 points. The Jays had four players in double figures led by Joe Flanagan who went over 1,000 career points on a second-half 3.
Alvernia returns home to face Arcadia University on Wednesday.
