Reading, Pa. (Jan. 5, 2011) - Gettysburg College (5-6) threw up a 13-3 run over the last four-plus minutes to erase an eight-point deficit and knock off Alvernia University (7-3), 63-61 Wednesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Alvernia got a free throw from senior Charlie Swiggett (Chester, Pa./Chester) with 4:14 to play to open a 58-50 lead, but hit just one layup and one free throw the rest of the way while the Bullets went 3-for-7 from the floor and hit 6-of-8 free throws to steal the win.

Alvernia senior Seth Cornell (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) led all scorers with 21 points and Gettysburg senior Andrew Powers totaled a team-best 20 points and 15 rebounds.  Alvernia hit all four free throws it attempted in the first half, but hit just 7-of-16 in the second half.  The Crusaders hit 10 3s, their highest toal of the season, but only hit 10 from inside the arc and shot 55 percent from the line.

Both teams held a lead of at least seven points in the first half.  Alvernia took the early advantage, 10-3, but gave it back and more watching the Bullets go up 11 points, 27-16.

The Crusaders answered that deficit with 11 straight points getting three from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester), three from Swiggett, and the last five from Cornell.  Gettysburg took a timeout after the Cornell layup that tied it at 27-all and finished the last two minutes of the half with six straight points for a 33-27 lead at the break.

The lead grew back to eight points for the Bullets early in the second half, but leading by six, 43-37 with 14 minutes to play, they saw Alvernia run off 14 of the next 15 capped by one of Cornell's five 3s for a 51-44 advantage at the 10:51 mark.

The exchange was fairly even over the next six minutes until Swiggett's free throw with 4:14 to go put the Crusaders up eight.

Kevin Kennedy joined Powers in double figures with 17.  Swiggett totalled 18 and junior Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) added a dozen.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule hosting Elizabethtown College on Saturday in a women's and men's doubleheader at 1:00 and 3:00.
