Reading, Pa. (Nov. 23, 2010) - Junior center Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) finished one block shy of a triple-double and was a big reason Alvernia University (3-1) knocked Rowan University (3-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten Tuesday evening with a 76-64 win in non-conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Boone notched 13 points, eight boards, and five blocks in the first half helping Alvernia survive early foul trouble.  Then Seth Cornell (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Charles Swiggett (Chester, Pa./Chester) torched the nets in the second half and the Crusaders ran their record to 3-0 against the Profs.

Junior Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) needed all of 80 seconds to pick up two fouls and Swiggett followed shortly after with two fouls separated by seven seconds to spark some tension in the home crowd.

Alvernia head coach Mike Miller decided to sit Nerney, but kept Swiggett in the game.  He protected his leading scorer with some basic zone defense, but Rowan banged back-to-back 3s for its first lead of the night, 12-9.  Two minutes later the Profs nailed another triple for a four-point edge.  They finished the night 8-for-19 from behind the arc after starting with a torid 4-for-8 effort in the first half.

Rowan knocked down its fourth and final 3 of the first half with 5:00 left then Boone took over scoring seven of Alvernia's final 11 points of the half to help the hosts to a 35-28 halftime lead while Rowan became careless with five turnovers in the final five minutes.

Cornell and Swiggett combined for Alvernia's first 25 points in the second half highlighted by a Cornell to Swiggett alley-oop dunk that threw thre crowd into a frenzy.  It was a welcome sight for Cornell who made nine shots in 28 attempts over his first three games and finished Tuesday's game 9-for-15.

When freshman Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) hit a free throw with 9:19 left in the game it was the first points by a different Crusaders and the hosts were up 15 points, 61-46.

Rowan was able to trim the gap down to six points -- on a 3 -- with 2:00 to play, but Cornell was fouled on a 3-point attempt and converted five straight free throws to push the lead back to 11.

Cornell finished with a game-high 24 points and Swiggett totaled 22.  Boone's final line was 14 points, 14 rebounds, nine blocks, and four assists.

Rowan had a pair of players reach double figures led by 15 points from Akeem Johnson.

Alvernia returns from the Thanksgiving break for the conference opener next Wednesday at Albright's Bollman Center.  Game time is 8:00 p.m.
