Alvernia Downs PSU-Schyulkill As Five Players Hit Double Digits

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2010) – The Alvernia Men's Basketball team (1-0) opened their 2010-2011 season with a convincing 107-59 win over visiting PSU-Schuylkill (0-3) this evening in non-conference action. Newcomers to the team Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) and Charles Swiggett (Chester, Pa./Chester) led the way with 17 and 19 points respectively.

The Crusaders started hot as the game opened, with a prompt 7-0 lead just less than two minutes into the game, and eventually built that to a 25-12 lead at 13:19. A ten-point run to end the first half saw Alvernia head into halftime doubling the Nittany Lions score 62-31. The Crusaders shot an impressive 55% from the floor and held PSU-Schuylkill to just 34.2%.

The second half was equally as dominated by Alvernia as their lead never dropped below 29 and grew to as much as 49 with a few minutes remaining in the game.

The Crusaders shot 47.8% from the floor for the game and were led by Boone with 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, while Swiggett added 19 of his own. Three other Crusaders also hit double digits with Tad Gillis (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby), Seth Cornell (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and William Harmon (Wilmington, De./St. Elizabeth) all netting 10 points and Cornell added a team-high six assists.

Alvernia returns to action this weekend as they host their own tip-off tournament and will open with a Friday night game at 8pm against PSU-Berks.
