NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University dropped its first home game of the season tonight, as the 11th ranked Randolph-Macon College (18-3) handed the Captains a 67-49 loss in the Freeman Center. CNU junior guard Conley Taylor led all scorers with 19 points and senior Mike Green fell just shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Both teams struggled early in the contest, as turnovers plagued the Captains and an early cold spell from the Yellow Jackets kept the half low-scoring.  CNU had 12 first-half giveaways and Randolph-Macon endured a streak of nearly eight minutes going just 2-for-10 from the field.

The nationally ranked Yellow Jackets snapped out of the early funk and finished the half shooting 36.7%, taking an 11-point lead into the locker room, 28-17. CNU also shot just 33.3% from the field in the first half.

The Captains chipped away at the lead early in the second half, scoring the first five points to get the lead back to just six. Taylor scored six of the Captains first nine points in the half to pull CNU as close as five with 14:20 remaining, but Macon answered with a surge of their own. R-MC ran off a 12-0 run over the next five minutes of action to regain their big lead.

The Yellow Jackets held the double-digit lead the rest of the way. Both teams continued to struggled from the field, as Macon shot just 39.7% in the game on 23-58 shooting, while CNU managed just 38% on 19-50 shooting. The dominant advantage came from beyond the arc, as the Yellow Jackets knocked down nine three-pointers to the Captains two.

CNU was led by Taylor, scoring a game-high 19 points on 7-15 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Green's 10 points and eight rebounds were paired with a couple blocks and a steal.

Three Randolph-Macon players finished in double figures, as Eric Pugh scored a team-high 16 on 4-11 shooting. Brandon Braxton and Lamar Giggets each added 12, while Danny Jones hauled in a team-high six rebounds.

Christopher Newport will look to bounce back on the home floor this weekend, as they host N.C. Wesleyan in USA South action on Saturday, February 5 at 4:00 pm, and then host non-conference foe Roanoke College on Sunday, February 6 at 2:00 pm.
