Macalester drains threes to knock off Gustavus

Pierce Peters (So., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) sank a pair of free throws with :23 to play to left Macalester to a 68-67 upset over Gustavus Adolphus Monday night in St. Peter. Peters finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Kyle Hamblett (Sr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) added 15 to pace the Scots, who snap a eight-game skid.

 

Chris Quinn (Fy., ) handed out a season-best eight assists and Justin Wasik (Fy., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) scored eight points.

Gustavus shot 53% from the floor, but Macalester enjoyed a 15-11 turnover advantage and 15-5 lead in offensive rebounds.

The Scots were able to overcome a 9-for-21 free throw shooting effort by knocking down 11-of-16 tries from behind the three-point line (69%).  Hamblett was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and Peters went 3-for-4.
 

Macalester led in points off turnovers (20-15), second chance points (13-7) and bench scoring (24-18).

 Gustavus shot 58% in the opening half and led 38-30 at the intermission.  Down 46-35, the Scots staged an 11-0 rally to go up by a point with 12:34 to go.  The game was close the rest of the way and Mac made one final stop in the closing seconds.
 

Macalester goes to 2-16 on the season, 2-11 in the MIAC.  The Scots go for two in a row Wednesday (Feb. 2) against Concordia-Moorhead at the Leonard Center at 7:45 p.m.
