Pointer Nets 1,000th Point, but #1,020 is the Winner as MVille Outlasts King's in 2OT Classic

More news about: Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Trevoy Pointer (Dallas, Texas/Skyline) became the 23rd Valiant to score 1,000 points for his career in the second half, then upped the dramatics by draining the game-winning three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in the second overtime as the Manhattanville men's basketball team outlasted King's (Pa.) College in an epic 115-111 (2OT) thriller at Kennedy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Pointer was the story in Purchase on this Saturday, as the junior moved from 24th to 21st on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,020 points and became just the eighth Valiant to reach the milestone in only three seasons. In addition, his career-high 32 points are the most ever scored by a Valiant on the same day as their 1,000th career point. The junior went 11 of 16 from the field and 8 of 9 from the line on the afternoon, while also chipping in four assists, three steals and three rebounds.

For the team, the 115 points scored are the seventh-most in a single game in school history and the most since Manhattanville dropped 118 on Centenary (N.J.) College in just 40 minutes on February 1, 2006.

While Pointer was certainly the star, it took a team effort to take down the Monarchs, as six Valiants reached double figures. Junior Glen Rodriguez (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Miami (Fla.) LaSalle) had a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, five rebounds and four assists, with senior Peter Mehmel (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) coming next with 16 points to go with four rebounds. Junior Ivan Jovicic (Belgrade, Serbia/Sports HS Belgrade) and senior Lamar Glass (Dallas, Texas/Skyline) added 15 and 12 points, respectively, while freshman Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) came on late to post 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench as well.

King's, meanwhile, relied almost exclusively on its starters, four of which combined for 93 of its 111 points. Leading the way was Kevin Conroy, who overcame a scoreless first half to pour in a team-high 27 in the final 30 minutes. Kyle Hammonds added 26 points and Matt Fiorino chipped in 24 as well for the visitors.

As evidenced by the score totals, shooting was not a problem on this afternoon, as both teams shot the lights out throughout and finished with some incredible numbers. Manhattanville ended the game at an amazing 62.7 percent (42 of 67) from the field, including 77.1 percent (27 of 35) after halftime, while King's "only" connected on a 56.1 percent (37 for 66) clip on the day.

Saturday's game had so many twists and turns down the stretch and into the overtimes, but in the end it was in the second overtime that the Valiants were finally able to pull away. The stanza was tied three different times before a three-pointer by Hammonds put the visitors up by a trey with exactly two minutes on the clock, but the Valiants got a big bucket a minute later when junior Brian Bertucci (Gibbsboro, N.J./Solebury Prep) found himself open under the hoop and made a nice layup under pressure to get the home team within one.

Bramswig made a huge block on the Monarchs' next possession, setting the stage for Pointer's dagger from the top of the arc that gave the home team a 113-111 edge with 27 seconds left.

However, the home team still had to defend, and Conroy immediately set up shop in the paint looking to tie the score. But both Bramswig and Rodriguez stuffed Conroy attempts in the paint as King's missed three shots from the paint before Bramswig hauled in a huge rebound with two seconds remaining. With the game largely decided, Pointer put the cherry on top with a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left.

The game did not look like it would need a second overtime at the end of the first, as both teams thought they had the game won. Pointer tied the score at 99-all with 14 seconds remaining but King's came the other way, and although Bramswig looked to get a clean block on Conroy from behind, a foul was called and the forward drained both freebies to give the Monarchs a 101-99 lead with five seconds left.

After the Valiants advanced the ball to halfcourt and called timeout with 2.6 ticks left, senior Jay Ferriere (Melbourne, Australia/Emerald Secondary) surprisingly did not look for Pointer but instead lobbed the ball toward the rim for Rodriguez. The junior caught it and laid it in while taking a foul, tying the score and giving the Valiants a seemingly miraculous chance at victory. However, Rodriguez's free throw attempt did not complete the fairy-tale ending and the teams played on.

The Valiants also had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, as Fiorino tied the score at 90 with a three-pointer but gave Manhattanville 34 seconds with which to draw up a final shot. After letting the clock run down, Pointer's jumper from the near baseline caromed off the rim and out, sending the game to extra time.

The last-second dramatics somewhat obscure that this could have been an easy victory for the home team, as Manhattanville never trailed after the first four minutes of regulation and held a comfortable lead for much of the contest. The Valiant lead grew to as many as 18 points (53-35) with 3:43 gone by in the second half, but King's slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually drew even.

Manhattanville (12-7, 4-4 Freedom) will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday night, as the Valiants head onto the road to take on perennial nemesis DeSales University in a big Freedom Conference matchup in Center Valley at 8 p.m. WMVL 88.1 FM will have the live audio broadcast of the game starting around 7:55 p.m. King's (11-8, 3-5 Freedom) will host Eastern University on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
