Warhawks Roll over Blue Devils

UW-Whitewater used a season high fourteen three point field goals to roll over UW-Stout 90-65 Saturday evening in the Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  The margin of victory is Whitewater's largest of the season, topping fifteen point wins over Wisconsin Lutheran November 24 and Carroll University December 21.

UW-W set the tone early, scoring the first six points of the game.  The Blue Devils were still within three, 18-15 at 10:39, when Whitewater went on an 8-0 run, part of a 14-3 advantage over just under two minutes that put UW-W in front 32-18 with 8:41 left.  The Warhawks also used a splurge, 11-0 this time, to take the margin from 37-24 to 48-24 with 4:20 on the clock, Whitewater's largest lead of the half.  The teams went into the lockerroom with UW-W in front 50-30.

Whitewater shot 64% in the first half while limiting the Blue Devils to 34% from the field.  UW-W also hit 10-16 attempts from beyond the arc (63%) at the same time Stout was going 4-12 (33%).  Whitewater senior guard DJ Dantzler led both teams with 12 points, hitting 4-4 from the floor, including 2-2 on threes.  Junior center Chris Davis added ten points on 4-5 shooting.  Freshman guard Cody Odegaard hit 3-4 threes in the half, all of them coming in a minute and a half span. Stout was led by senior forward Eric Hostetter and freshman guard Steve Pax, both with nine points.

UW-W continued to slowly build on its lead in the second half, with the final score the largest margin of the game.

Part of Whitewater's winning margin came at the free throw line, where UW-W went 19-28.  Stout made just five of seven attempts, the fewest number of free throws made by a Warhawk opponent this season. 

The Warhawks had a season high five players score in double figures.  Dantzler led with 20, with Davis and Odegaard adding 16 each.  Sophomore gaurd Antone Byrd and freshman guard Eric Bryson each contributed 10 points.  Senior center Marty Kujath led all players with seven rebounds, while senior point guard Phil Negri dished out seven assists, second high for a Warhawk player this season.  Byrd also chipped in with six assists.  Stout had two double figure scorers, led by Hostetter's 16 and 12 from Pax. 
Sophomore guard Erik Olson passed for six assists.

UW-W is 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  Stout is 8-11 and 3-8 in league play.

The Warhawks will travel to UW-La Crosse Wednesday, February 2 for a 7:00 tipoff.  The next home game will be February 12 at 3:00 against UW-Eau Claire.
