Transy knocks off Hanover

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania's Barrett Meyer put up 22 points in the Pioneer's 77-67 victory over Hanover Wednesday in a key Heartland Conference men's basketball matchup at the Beck Center. Transy is 13-5 overall, 7-4 HCAC, while the Panthers, losers of their last three games, are 12-5, 8-3. Hanover came into the contest tied with Anderson for first in the league race while Transy was in a tie for fourth. Meyer went seven-for-14 from the field, four of which were from behind the arc. Behind him were a pair of Pioneers with 14 points each, Ethan Spurlin and Chris Owens. Spurlin shot six-for-eight with nine rebounds and two steals, while Owens was added four rebounds and three assists. Also in the double-digits for Transy was Ashley Hatfield, who netted 11 points. The second half saw a lot of back and forth action for the first seven minutes until the Pioneers took control and never looked back. Transy extended the lead to eleven with four minutes remaining with a basket by Brandon Rash. Both teams were even in rebounding, pulling down 30 boards a piece, but Transy led in second chance points with 18 to Hanover's 14. The Pioneers shot 53 percent from the field, while the Panthers put up a 44.4 percent shooting percentage. Grandt Pangallo led the Panthers with 25 points, five assists and four steals. Mitchell Meyer finished the game with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. When both teams hit the locker rooms in the first half, Transy led 37-35. The Pioneers had conference leader Hanover against the ropes early in the first half by going on a 10-2 run. Spurlin and Owens had 10 points a piece after the first 20 minutes. Hanover made a comeback with the help of Pangallo, who dropped 20 points in the first period. The Pioneers will travel to Rose-Hulman for their next outing on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
