Heidelberg Men Defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 83-62, in Tiffin in OAC Action

TIFFIN, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Dane Givner scored a game-high-tying 20 points as the Heidelberg University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 83-62, tonight (Wednesday, January 26, 2011) in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was Heidelberg's second straight and fifth in its last seven contests. B-W lost for the fourth straight time.

In addition to Givner for the Student Princes, now 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the OAC,  senior forward Kyle Tuley scored 12 points and sophomore center Nate Davis had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and junior guard Clifton Powell had 10 points. B-W, now 7-11 overall and 3-8 in the OAC, was led by freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) with a game-high-tying 20 points and eight rebounds rebounds and senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 10 points..


In the first half, the Student Princes opened the game with the first six points for a 6-0 lead before B-W's Payne scored on a layup at the 18:29 mark to close to 6-2. Heidelberg kept up the pressure and built a 10-point lead at 12-2 before B-W freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a three-pointer at the 16:36 mark to make the score 12-5.


The Student Princes then scored the next four points to lead 16-5 at the 15:09 mark when sophomore guard Wes Paramore made a layup. B-W then went on a 5-0 run to close to 16-10 at the 12:58 mark when Meeder made a layup. Meeder's layup followed a second Krakowiak trey at the 13:01 mark. Undaunted, Heidelberg outscored B-W 10-4 to build its largest advantage of the contest at 26-14 at the 7:27 mark when senior forward Derrick Flynn scored a layup to end a fastbreak.


B-W outscored Heidelberg 10-5 to close to seven points at 31-24 when Payne made a jumper at 4:20, but the Student Princes came right back with a 11-1 run to break the game open as Paramore made a steal and layup with two second left before the intermission as Heidelberg led 42-25 at the break.


In the second half, Payne scored the first two points of the stanza at 18:51 when he canned a jumper to make the score 42-27. After Heidelberg scored four straight points to lead 46-27, B-W outscored the Student Princes 8-2 to close to 13 points at 48-35 with 14:56 left when junior All-OAC point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) made a layup, was fouled and madec the foul shot. Again, Heidelberg came right back with an 8-0 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers by Givner, to build its largest lead of the game at 21 points at 56-35 with 13:28 remaining.


B-W then went on a 7-0 run to close to 56-42 at the 11:17 mark when Payne made a layup.  After Heidelberg built its lead back to 18 points at 60-42, B-W went on an 8-2 run to close to 12 points at 62-50 when Meeder made a pair of foul shots at 7:14. Heidelberg then outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-10 to build its lead to a game-high 23 points at 83-60.

 

The B-W men return to action this Saturday, January 29 when they host OAC foe Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. The B-W and Wilmington women tipoff at 2:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.


In addition, this Saturday's Wilmington games will be telecast by SportsTime Ohio.
