ROCHESTER, NY – Despite a 24-point effort from senior wing Reid Anderson (Avon Lake, OH/St. Edward), the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team lost its second straight University Athletic Association game by a score of 86-72 at the University of Rochester on Sunday, January 23 at the Palestra.
The Spartans fall to 7-9 overall and 3-2 UAA. Rochester improves to 12-4 and 4-1 UAA.
In addition to Anderson, junior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while senior center Eric Duerr (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) totaled 10 points and eight boards.
Rochester was led by John DiBartolomeo with a game-high 30 points and eight assists. The Yellowjackets shot .525 (31-of-59) from the field, including .500 (9-of-18) from three-point range.
The Spartans grabbed their first lead at 12-9 when Chung hit a three-pointer to cap a 10-2 run at 14:13. Rochester answered with a 13-3 run and led 22-15 when Mike Labanowski made two free throws at the 9:42 mark. Case chipped away over the next five and a half minutes and regained the lead at 29-28 when Duerr hit a layup with 4:03 left in the first half. The two sides then exchanged leads over the duration of the period and Rochester went into the break ahead, 41-37, as John DiBartolomeo hit a triple at the buzzer.
In the second half, Case got to within two, at 47-45, when Anderson completed a three-point play with 16:17 left in the game, but Rochester was able to rebuild its advantage to 16, when DiBartolomeo scored a layup to cap a 16-2 run at 11:58. The Yellowjackets' lead grew to a high of 22 when Labanowski canned a three-pointer with 6:17 remaining.
The Spartans return to action next Friday, Jan. 28 at the University of Chicago (IL) at 8:00 p.m. (CT). The team also is on the court at Washington University (MO) on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
