Chris Gilkes and Chad Burridge each hit a pair of free throws in the final ten seconds to give the Oswego State men's basketball team a 74-71 victory over host Brockport on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers saw a 13-point second-half lead evaporate with 30 seconds remaining, but head coach Adam Stockwell's squad scored the final four points of the game to pull out the critical win as Oswego State moved to 7-1 in the league and 11-3 overall.  The Golden Eagles fell to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC.

In addition to Burridge's 25 points, Hayden Ward came off the bench to post a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds.  Sean Michele also tallied 12 points for the Lakers.  Brockport's Kyheem Green and Gerald Williams combined to score 48 points for the host squad.

Oswego State held a tenuous two-point lead with 13:22 left in the first half before going on a three-minute, 10-0 run to go ahead 21-9.  The Golden Eagles made a late charge to level the score at 31-31 with two minutes remaining until Ward scored four points and Michele drilled a pair of free throws to carry a 37-31 halftime lead.

Ward recorded seven straight points for the Lakers to give Oswego State a 53-40 lead near the midway point of the frame.  However, Brockport gradually cut into the deficit until a layup by Derek Klein gave the Golden Eagles a 71-70 advantage with 31 seconds to play.  On the ensuing possession, the Lakers missed their first shot attempt, but Gilkes came down with a key offensive rebound that resulted in him hitting a pair of free throws seconds later to put Oswego State ahead 72-71. 

When the Golden Eagles went to in-bound the ball, the Laker defense forced a turnover to gain one more possession.  Burridge was immediately fouled once the ball was put into play, and he sank both free throw shots to give Oswego State a 74-71 edge.  Brockport had two final three-point attempts in the final nine seconds, but were unable to send the contest into overtime.

Free-throw shooting was a critical aspect of the game as the Lakers converted 23-of-32 free throw attempts (71.9 percent) compared to the Golden Eagles converting 11-of-14 free throw attempts (78.6 percent).

Oswego State wraps up the first half of conference play when it travels to New Paltz on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
