Big Second Half Run Powers Spartans Past Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's basketball team used a 34-7 second half run to secure a 90-62 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD on Wednesday night. The Spartans, winners of three straight, improve to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 5-12 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Senior Kevin Whaley led the Spartans with a career-high 29 points as the guard led all scorers in the game.

The Spartans owned control of the game early as they built a 15-6 lead on a Whaley three with just under 14 minutes left in the opening half. The Spartan lead grew to 11 twice in the opening half, the second time coming on a Paul Kouvaris lay up with 5:40 left as the Spartan lead stood at 28-17. The Mustangs scored 15 of the final 21 points of the half as the Spartan lead dwindled to 34-32 at the break.

The Spartans opened the second half on a 14-6 run to increase the lead back to ten at 48-38 with 14:04 left in regulation. The Mustangs hit York with a quick 7-0 spurt, cutting the York lead to three at 48-45 with 12:25 showing on the clock. The Green and White then put together the game-changing run starting with a Whaley three with 12:12 left. Senior Matt Moley capped the run with a pair of free throws as the run took almost exactly eight minutes and ended with the Spartans leading 82-52 with 4:18 left in the game. The Spartans cleared the bench and settled for the 28-point final margin of victory. It is the sixth time this season that the Spartans have won by 20 points or more.

Whaley's career night came on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor including 3-of-6 from distance. He also converted all six of his free throw attempts. Whaley also had four assists, two steals and two rebounds in his 32 minutes of work. Kouvaris reached a new career-high with his 17 rebounds while he also had seven points, three assists and four steals. Sophomore Jeremy Skoloda was the other Spartan in double figures with 15 points as he was 6-for-9 from the floor including a pair of triples and one free throw. The Spartans had 13 players score in the win.

Joe Hindle led the Mustangs with 11 points and six rebounds in his 19 minutes of work. Hindle was 4-of-12 from the floor including 3-of-7 from three. Greg Woody added nine points, four assists and a pair of rebounds for the Mustangs.

The Spartans finished the contest shooting 45.6% from the floor, 42.9% (6-for-14) from three and an impressive 81.5% (22-for-27) from the charity stripe. The Green and White held the Mustangs to 39.3% shooting from the field including 25% (4-for-16) from three while the hosts converted 14-of-22 (63.6%) from the free throw line. The contest is the sixth time that the Spartans have held an opponent below 40% shooting for the game. York is 6-0 in those contests.

York held a 45-34 edge on the glass while the Spartans forced 21 turnovers, which they turned into 31 points. York also held a 14-3 margin in fast break points.

The Spartans return to Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon when they host Marymount University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time is set for 2:00 pm in York.
