Maritime Falls To Old Westbury, 65-57, At Home

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury, 65-57, Sunday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers fall to 5-9 overall on the season (3-6 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 5-9 (4-5 Skyline).

Senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) led Maritime with 18 points, while classmate Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) contributed 12. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) registered 10 points to round out the Privateers with double-digit scoring. Senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) led Maritime with eight rebounds.

The Privateers started the game on a 7-2 run over the first two minutes. The lead hit 10 points, 18-8, at 10:42 after a three-pointer by senior Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Maritime built the advantage up to 13 points twice and went into the locker room at halftime leading by 10 points, 34-24. The Privateers were shooting 45.2-percent from the field and held Old Westbury to just 36.7-percent.

In the second half, the Panthers closed the gap within the first six minutes, tying the score 42-42 at 13:37 on a jumper by senior Frantz Granjean. They took their first lead of the game, 46-44, just under two minutes later on a layup by junior Jamal Little. The score was tied five times until Old Westbury took the lead for good at 4:22 on a jumper by Granjean. The Panthers built their lead up to six points with 2:50 remaining and, despite the Privateers fouling to get the ball back, Old Westbury held on for the victory.

The Panthers were led by Granjean, who scored a game-high 24 points. Senior Lester Prosper recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Little finished the night with 17 points.

Maritime continues their three-game homestand on Tuesday night, when the squad welcomes Skyline-foe Bard. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
