Brockport Men Blow Out New Paltz

More news about: Brockport
Junior Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) scored 21 points and freshman Jon Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) added a career-high 18 points as Brockport rolled past New Paltz 83-63 Saturday afternoon inside Brockport's Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

New Paltz took an early 5-4 lead before the Golden Eagles (6-6 overall, 4-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference) responded with a 14-0 run to seize control with an 18-5 lead. With Brockport's advantage up to 23-12, the Golden Eagles went on a 13-0 run as Ivy, junior Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman), sophomore Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) each buried three-pointers and Ivy and Williams added layups off fast-breaks to pump Brockport's lead to 36-12.

Brockport took its largest lead of the game, 45-17, on another Williams fast-break layup, as the sensational sophomore finished with 14 first-half points. Brockport shot 55.2 percent from the field in the half and limited New Paltz (8-5, 4-3) to 24 percent shooting (6 of 25) in winning for the fourth time in five games.

In the second half, New Paltz relied on its trap to cut into the Brockport lead, and only trailed 55-44 with 10:41 remaining, but the Golden Eagles regained their composure and used one last spurt – this time a 20-7 spurt – to pull away for good.

"Every single win we've had, and every loss for that matter, has been close," said Greg Dunne, Brockport's fourth-year head coach.

"This was the first time that we were able to get a lead – and basketball is a game of runs, so New Paltz did make a run at us in the second half -- but we persevered. We made sure we stayed focused, got back into it and got ourselves a nice 20-point win. As a team, it's great to be able to get almost every guy in the game and get some guys some looks. It's great for the overall team morale."

Green finished with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. Klein finished with nine points and six assists and junior Kazeem Are (South Orange, NY/Columbia) added 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Williams hit nine of 10 free throws and Ivy connected on all eight of his free throw attempts as Brockport shot 84.8 percent at the line (28 of 33).

"Jon Ivy, he's a freshman and he came in highly touted, we expected big things from him and he really struggled early on," Dunne said. "Jon had a great weekend for us and this is the way we expect him to play the rest of the year.

On the glass, Brockport enjoyed a 41-27 edge over New Paltz. Ten of the 14 Golden Eagles who played scored, including senior Justin Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), who scored his first two points of the year.

The Golden Eagles have won 12 of the last 14 matchups against New Paltz. During the streak, Brockport has outscoring New Paltz by an average of 92.2-72.2.

Brockport, which moved into sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC, returns to action Tuesday night when the Golden Eagles travel to Fredonia (4-7, 1-4 SUNYAC) for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
